Highcharts has no diverging series type — a pyramid is two stacked bar series with one side's values negated — so the adapter recognises the chart from its data. The sign is a direction rather than a magnitude: the pitch takes the size of a cohort and the announcement names its side, and the summary row reports which side is ahead.
