Each stage announces its count, what share of the population that entered reached it, and how much of the previous stage survived. The pitch carries the retention rather than the count: on a raw scale the worst stage in a funnel is routinely not the biggest fall, and a listener hearing absolute heights would hear the two the wrong way round.
